When I was a college student and would travel from place to place, people would often wonder about my background. They would ask me questions about my country of origin. I told them that I am Khmer, as that is my true identity from birth. Most people react with a blank expression when they hear that response, as they have no idea what I mean by “Khmer” and the majority can’t even locate Cambodia on the map. Only when I mention Angkor Wat, the famous temple site from antiquity, is there perhaps some recognition. It is the Second Wonder of the World and a popular cultural destination for tourists these days and now. It also contains sacred scriptures that captivate the hearts of millions of Cambodians, reinforcing in them their original identity as a people handed down to them from ancient times.
